Mobile phones on Phi Phi Island
All mobile phones work on Phi Phi Island at Phi Phi Don Village. This represents the majority of Phi Phi Island hotels and resorts. There are no places to buy phone cards. There are places to buy mobile covers and carriers.
Holiday Inn Resort Phi Phi Island Pee Pee Island Village and Phi Phi Natural Resort do not have a signal. These hotels and bungalows have connections to the mainland.
Past to the Present
Until 1994 there were only 12 phones with 075 (Krabi Province prefix) relayed to the only antenna at the Phi Phi Cabana Hotel. This meant that all other businesses used old fashioned radio phones that connected to Krabi and the rest of Thailand.
This kept Phi Phi Island in the past for a longtime as the Islands were remote enough to make the news filtering in a slow pace.
In 1999 UBC satellite television arrived and suddenly exposed the island to CNN, BBC but most importantly, Premier League football from England. In the same 6 months internet arrived and then finally another mast was erected to connect mobile phones. The effect on the island was fundamental and now the Phi Phi Island is as connected as the mainland.
