Phi Phi Tsunami Recovery Image Gallery

The following pictures taken March 22, 2005 show the recovery of Phi Phi. Travelers returned in droves and it is now that you actually have the chance to see this famous tropical island in a pristine stage just as it was maybe 10 years ago. And some people say, with the cleanup, Phi Phi has become even nicer in places than before... Initially the images of Phi Phi island after the Tsunami were awful showing huge piles of rubbish but as the clean up continued the island returned to it's original beauty, the Village re invented it's Asian Bazaar feel and to many who were lucky enough to not be affected, a memory. For those who were caught up in those terrible days the memory is still hard to fully understand and phi-phi.com sends its sympathy and marks this event with these words.

Phi Phi Island main Pier after the Tsunami Photos

The main pier of Phi Phi island is pictured here from the land's end and this is the center of all activities transport and supplies. It is probably too small and can get very conjested. Dive companies send their tanks to the end of the pier for their day trips, ferries load and unload people for their onward trips to Phuket, Krabi and Koh Lanta and the day to day supplies to all the Phi Phi Hotels stream in all day and night. This is a great place to hang out and watch the day go by. Try Amico's restaruant fora view of the pier.

Phi Phi Island pancake kiosk Photo

Pancake kiosks seem to be every where in the main village on Phi Phi Don. It seems to be one of the key snacks that cross over between the Thai and tourist visiting the Island.

Favouites seem to be chocolate, banana, honey sweet syrup or variations of that and the Thai tastes also include pancake with fried egg and sugar. The pancake is very similar to an Indian roti and in the south of Thailand amongst the Muslims this is is a morning breakfast meal with a bowl of chicken curry.

One of the oldest pancake ladies, someone who has come down from the north of Thailand in the early 90’s, is next to PP Bakery about 100 meters from the main pier on Phi Phi Don.

Hi Phi Phi collection station during the Tsunami clean up on Phi Phi Island Photo

Hi Phi Phi was founded soon after the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004 and it's main drive was to help rebuild the lives of those effected, those who lost their loved ones, those who needed a helping hand to rebuild their family's income.

The collection table here and Hi Phi Phi Volunteers was a regular sight and was a continual reminder to those who came to remember and help rebuild. Donations given for artifacts left behind and donated was used to buy materials and equipment to rebuild homes and businesses for people who relied on Phi Phi Island businesses to feed their families.

Phi Phi Island is very much back on it’s feet with work and incomes generated to feed the families but there were many families displaced and children orphaned who still live in Krabi.

Phi Phi Island Hotels are for sale Photo soon after the 2004 Tsunami

This sign board is typical of the hoardings in the Phi Phi Travel Businesses owned by Phi Phi locals showing the hotels that quickly got back into business.

One of the first Resorts to be back in Action was Phi Phi Andaman Beach Resort owned and run by Bang Mann. It was his and families like him with their determination to open against the odds that rejuvenated the Phi Phi travel scene earlier than many expected. Phi Phi Island was up and running by the end of that year.

Many of the local guides still use simple boards like this at the main Phi Phi ferry Pier to promote hotels or guesthouses for those who arrive on the island without accommodation.

Pichamon boat from Krabi to Phi Phi Island under Phi Phi Ley Photo

Pichamon Ferry from Phi Phi to Krabi is a daily service carrying travelers and holiday makers is fast comfortable and reliable.

In the low season this is not the best boat if the waves at Shark Point by Phi Phi island have built up but in the high season the ferry is the travelers dream. Relaxing, sunbathing, and just soaking in the cruise is a perfect way to arrive on Phi Phi.

I have traveled to Phi Phi Island for the last 15 years and to a boat, rain storm or shine there is always one thing that stays the same. Half the boat will take out their phone camera, vdo, camera and take pictures. As you pass the shark point at Long beach the Phi Ph Don cliffs impress all that see them.
