Phi Phi: diving and underwater life gallery

Phi Phi underwater life is some of the more extraordinary in the Andaman seas of southern Thailand. The huge variation of species of fish derives from the unique underwater habitats around Phi Phi island. The huge cliffs of Phi Phi Ley and Phi Phi Don cast dark shadows for half the day and have left dramatic underwater scenery as boulders the size of houses have been strewn over the sea bed. This gives rise to the perfect environment for millions of the smaller species to hide from their predators. The open reefs of Bamboo island and Rantee Bay on Phi Phi Don do not have the same variations but are more accessible. Most people rent their snorkel gear from the travel businesses in Tonsai Village on Phi Phi Don.

Sweet lips on coral near maya Bay Phi Phi Island Photo

The underwater scenery in Phi Phi Maya Bay is sensational. I prefer to snorkel the shallow reefs or under the steep cliffs of Phi Phi Ley as most of the reefs are only 3-5 meters deep. It is easy to duck dive and glide among the corals and shoals of small reef fish.

Some of the more interesting places to dive are those areas that get quiet a bit of shade. The walls around Phi Phi Maya Bay are vertical and these cast long shadows that creat a hole new variety of underwater scenery.

The best Diving in Phi Phi Maya Bay is on the Northern wall near the entrance. Here large boulders have fallen off the cliffs in about 10 meters of water and so you have many fantastic swim though and glorious fan corals. The dive sites above the water line are some of the most dramatic in the world.

Hard corals Phi Phi Island Photo

The Photo Phi Phi ‘s hard corals is a classic. Phi Phi island is surrounded by 20km of reefs and the fast majority are composed of hard corals. In amongst the coral the tropical fish and juvenile deep sea species live hide and grow. The techno colour experiences of diving or snorkeling are what make Phi Phi island hard corals famous.

Scores of divers learn their PADI open water on Phi Phi Island and the streets of Phi Phi Don Village are full of travel agencies renting out snorkel equipment for those who prefer the shallower reefs.

Divers see corals like this on Phi Phi Island Photo

Phi Phi Diving is some of the best in Thailand outside the Similan Islands. The huge cliffs of Phi Phi ley and Phi Phi Don, the open reefs like Hin Klang and Bamboo Island, the north west east south nature of the reefs, the tide and seasons make a huge variation of marine and coral scenery.

Where there are stronger tides likeup at Mosquito island, the soft fan corals grow well, where the water is deep as with the Bida Islands the corals hold darker colours and completely different coral growths.

A Barracuda off Phi Phi Island Photo

This photo was taken off Phi Phi island near Bida Rock south of Phi Phi Ley. Barracudas are often spotted here where the deep drop offs and abundant see life make exciting hunting grounds for this natural predator. Jack fish also swirl around the infant shoals ready for an easy meal.

Phi Phi Divers are often seen here taking in the feed frenzies. The dive companies that have an early start seem to see the better marine life.
