Phi Phi Snorkeling Image Gallery

Snorkeling on Phi Phi island is a pleasure I have enjoyed since 1992. The shear variety, the unexpected, always give me a great anticipation for every new encounter. From the simple reefs on the mountain end of Tonsai Bay on Phi Phi Don to the remote soft corals of Mosquito Island to the north of the Phi Phi islands, to the huge boulders behind Phi Phi Don to the dark deep caverns near Wang Long there is always something new to see. Some of my favorite snorkel trips involves the caves near Nui Bay where large clouds of baitfish sit in balls of black only to be disturbed by the odd snorkeler or Long Tom (fish). The other favorite trip is the shark watch snorkel trip on Long Beach where I have seen many black tip sharks on all 50+ times I have been there. The trick is to get their at sunrise.

Snorkeling near Phi Phi Island Photo in December

This photo is taken on Phi Phi island coral reefs in the south of Thailand. The coral of Phi Phi is shallow on the whole 1-8 meters near Tonsai Village and Runtee Bay coast line on Phi Phi Don and this makes for ideal snorkeling as the sun can penetrate and bring out the best of the colour in all the marine life.

Around Phi Phi Ley Island the shallower reefs are in Maya bay and Loh Samah and at the entrance of Pi Ley. The rest of the shores of Phi Phi ley are cliffed and are from 8-24 meters. This deeper reefs are the ones dived and divers from all over the world enjoy an incredible variation of underwater environment which changes by seasons and every hour in the tide. The visibility on Phi Phi island will also change by season and by the state of the tide.

Lion Fish on Phi Phi Island Photo

Lion fish are some of the most impressive and colour on the Phi Phi islands. This photo taken on Phi Phi Ley shows the Lion Fish apparently floating and waiting. This is typical. The sharp tentacles are pointed and poisoness and so the Lion Fish should be treated with even more respect than other marine species.

There are many Lion Fish on the Phi Phi Islands and are a great delight to all those who dive or snorkel.

Close up of parrot fish and snorkeller near Phi Phi Island Photo

Every time I hear the word Parrot I think of the Monty Python sketch which is off putting as this photo has a parrot fish swimming in front of me. Phi Phi Island is full of these parrot fish and they are know for creating the sand we walk on. Parrot fish eat the coral surface and their waste is sand. Huge sand beaches of Phi Phi Island owe a lot to the parrot fish.
